Spring 2010 Grant Awards

Professional Library-A Special Place For Teachers ($1,242.95) Donna Frecker, PVE;  This grant provides teachers more access to materials that they can use as resources in the classroom.  Mentor texts would be used to teach reading strategies.  An IntelliScanner would allow teachers to scan the books and to see a list of materials that are offered.

Environmental Ambassadors ($2,000.00) Julie Noel and Elizabeth Ridgeway, ZCHS;  Through an environmental education and wilderness adventure program sponsored by Camptown, students will learn environmental stewardship principles and advocacy skills.  The project focuses on group dynamics, personal roles and responsibilities, trust, communication skills, problem solving, fostering independence, and service to others.

Leveled Learning Library "L3" ($1,247.33) Amanda O’Donnell, Kelli Barbuch, Patti McNally, Mitzi Macaluso, Sara Thornley and Kraig Roederer, ZCHS;  Supplemental workbooks would be purchased that break down educational concepts into more manageable portions at a lower reading level to help the students understand why they need to know the material and how to apply it.  

Ears Wide Open ($1,653.39) Patti McNally and Sara Thornley, ZCHS;  This project allows students who are auditory learners to listen to novels on an IPOD versus reading the novel.  Not only can it be used to download assigned novels, but it can also be used for downloading recorded classroom lectures.

Operation Survivor-Learning Center Survival Kit ($1,385.24) Mitzi Macaluso and Kraig Roederer, ZCHS;  This project creates survival kits with instructional aids to allow students using the Learning Center to excel.  

Seif's Student Authors ($750.00) Jen Skura, Stonegate;  4th grade students will work with published author Adam Seif to learn innovative prewriting strategies and then turn those ideas into completed pieces of writing.  Students will also receive copies of two of Mr. Seif's books as part of this learning project.

Dog Days At Union ($775.00) Maggie James, Union;  This grant would allow the guidance counselor to purchase a therapy dog to be used to create service learning opportunities for the students.  This project will inspire students to show safety; trustworthiness, acceptance of others, respect, and responsibility.  The dog will also be used as a tangible and exciting reward to students on a behavior plan.

Reading Rocks (When I’m Having Fun!) ($476.53) Deb Brooks,  Eagle;  This grant would allow the purchase of several individual and small group games that will reinforce and motivate students to increase their learning, while the teacher is working in a small group of other students.  The materials will be organized by reading skill and by learning level.

Making Math Time Meaningful! ($528.15) Deb Brooks,  Eagle;  Individual and small group math activities will provide an opportunity to reinforce learning skills and allow the teacher time to work with smaller groups of students.

Playing And Learning Simultaneoulsy (P A.L.S.) ($2,545.00) Deb Krupowicz, PVE;  This grant would expand activity opportunities to all the 3rd and 4th grade students during recess.  This will invite involvement of more students in new games and activities, nurture relationship among students, and provide new ways for them to learn to play and then work together.  Student leaders will be instrumental in the implementation.

Innovation in the HA/AP/IB Classrooms:  Implementing Applied Practice Guides & Strategies to Encourage Academic Excellence & Student Confidence ($1,296.60) Christie Clark and Scott Fisher, ZCHS;   The high school English teachers will purchase a set of Applied Practice Pre-AP and AP teacher resource guides to use for the classrooms. The guides will offer students multiple practice opportunities for the real AP exams they take in the spring every year.

See the U.S.A. in the Second Grade ($2,174.00) Tina Hand and Jayne Shubat, Eagle;  The 2nd grade students are involved in a year-long state research project.  This grant will purchase a non-fiction series that will allow students the opportunity to enjoy and read independently at their own individual pace as they research and gain in-depth knowledge about their particular state.

Tea for All…Three Cups of Tea:  Uniting the ZCS Community through Reading ($550.00) Carrie Sanders, ZWMS; Sarah Seligman , ZMS; Jane Bewley, ZCHS; Chris Kramer, Eagle;  All ZCS Schools;  This grant allows for the purchase of multiple copies of the children’s version and adult version of "Three Cups of Tea" to expand the ZCS community reading experience to the elementary and high schools.  

Attention=Retention ($1,193.00) Kimberly Kasal, Eagle;  This grant would purchase WittFitt Balance balls for a third grade class at Eagle.  Students are more focused when they are actively engaged through movement. "Active sitting" improves attention and concentration, posture, blood flow, flexibility, coordination and balance.

Students and Technology Safety-In and Out of the Classroom ($999.40) Julie Breuninger, Dana Nelson and Lori Wernsman, ZWMS;  Materials will provide age-appropriate information for each grade level to ensure the middle school students are informed in safe and appropriate use of all the technology at their disposal.  Each student would receive 8 or more lessons on these topics over the 4 years they are in middle school.

New Knowledege Through Nonfiction ($1760.55) Leanne Thacker, ZWMS;  This grant requests a classroom set of nonfiction books that can be used for research and writing for the seventh grade students as the undertake their research projects.
